Fitness Tip of the Day: How to Perfect Form

With every exercise, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it. Most of you are probably doing it the wrong way, as everyone does without guidance from someone who’s been in the game longer than you have. Our fitness tip of the day is all about how to go about perfecting form to keep you safe and how to get the most out of each exercise.

Watch Someone Else Do It

The average lug head in the gym doesn’t know what they’re doing. They think it’s as easy as lifting a weight up and putting it down again. Wrong! If you’re doing this, the chances are you’re on the way to snap city. At the very least you’re going to look dumb in front of anyone with more than three brain cells.

Seek out the resident expert in your gym and get some pointers from them. Encourage them to watch you.

Video Yourself

Take a video of yourself doing the exercise. This is the essence of this fitness tip of the day. Like with most gym tips, you’ll correct most errors with a video. Video yourself and show the movie to the expert you met in the above section.

Downgrade the Weight

Go for a one-rep max and you’re always going to see some of your form degrading. That’s acceptable. But until you know the form you shouldn’t be doing this. Remember snap city? DO YOU?!

Take the weight down and perfect form. Many coaches will even teach things like squats with just the bar. Form is everything and without any weight is where you really start to become aware of what you’re doing.

Bottom Line – Swallow Your Pride

Know why people don’t get things right? They’re scared to admit they’re messing up. Swallow that pride and ask someone to watch you. Learn from someone more experienced. It might stall your lifting progress for now, but you’ll rocket past your friends who are headed for the big plates on the first day.
